Creating and editing snippets in Textexpander for iOS 8.4.9

When starting the new iOS app (8.4.9) I am presented with the settings page.

Shouldn’t there be a place where I can create and edit snippets?

I have deleted and reinstalled the 8.4.9 version after I deletede the older version of Textexpander, but this did not change anything.

When will creating and editing snippets be available in the iOS app?

Hi Karl,

Currently, the public App Store release of TextExpander for iOS does not show your snippet library, or have the ability to create and edit snippets.

To use the TextExpander keyboard on your iPad or iPhone, you will select the Globe icon on your keyboard - much like you would do when switching to the Emoji keyboard. You would select the Globe again until you see the TextExpander logo on the keyboard (an orange stylized ’t’). Once you see the TextExpander logo, you will be able to type your Snippet abbreviations on the keyboard and have them expand.

Here’s a clip showing how to switch into the TextExpander Keyboard, so that typing triggers your snippets: https://share.zight.com/019ff77e-f11a-7cde-b0db-dada569c13be

You can also search for any snippet by using the Magnifying Glass icon, located in the upper-left corner of the TextExpander on-screen keyboard. You can search by abbreviation, label, or contents of a snippet; just like using Inline Search with the desktop TextExpander app.

In the meantime, we do have a new beta version of TextExpander for iOS available (8.5), if you’d like to give it a try. This new beta version includes a Snippet Library viewer, and the ability to create/edit your snippets. I don’t yet know an exact timeframe for this to be published into the App Store.

I do recommend removing and deleting the App Store version of TextExpander for iOS before installing the beta version. This will help reduce any potential conflicts. If you change your mind, you can always delete the beta version, and re-install the public App Store release at any time.

To get started:

  1. Navigate to https://testflight.apple.com/join/RYmRh7r1 on your iOS/iPadOS device
  2. Install TestFlight, which will allow you to install our TextExpander Keyboard Beta.

Quick tips:
-Once you’ve downloaded TestFlight, go back and select the link above, it will automatically take you to the TextExpander Beta download page.
-If you are seeing a prompt to enter a code, please cancel that prompt, minimize TestFlight, then click on the link above and this should connect you to the beta.

Thanks for the tip about TestFlight.

Alas it does not work for me:

When installing Textexpander from TestFlight and starting Textexpander for the first time it goes through the normal onboarding procedure, advising you to add Textexpander keyboard and allowing full access. After that is done Textexpander crashes on start up.

Trying to start up again Textexpander freezes - just showing the logo - see screen dump below.

Other versions of Textexpander has been deleted several restarts ago - I am running iOS 27.0.1 on an iPhone 15 Plus

Hi Karl,

Thanks for the follow-up!

Please try the following steps:

  1. Force-Quit the TextExpander app
  2. Restart your iOS device (so that you see the ‘slide to power off’ switch)
  3. Re-launch the TextExpander app, then switch into the TextExpander keyboard somewhere you’d like to expand a snippet, and wait 3-5 seconds for it to fully load and connect, then try using a Snippet again.

If that still doesn’t work for you, try to see if you can see the ‘Report a Problem’ option in the TextExpander app. This will collect a set of log files, and pre-populate them in an email to send directly to our support team.

Reinstalled the TestFlight version, and got a new version, that seems to work without crashing or freezing on startup.

After a bit of “warming up” expanding from abbreviations seems to work OK - a bit sluggish from time to time.

(By “warming up” I mean, that the first handful of times I tried to expand from an abbreviation, the Textexpander keyboard froze when typing the last letter of the abbreviation).

I think this case can be closed as solved

Who the hell decided to make such a terrible decision to remove snippet editing from IOS App?
This is a nightmare at all based on stupid decisions.
And there is NO transparency at all, only by googling and luckily finding this community post.

But in modern AI times, most software becomes weaker with every release because AI only supports the comfort of lazy people. This is my opinion on this MAJOR issue.

Hopefully v8.5 will be available asap, so the current nightmare ends promptly.

Hi Joachim,

We have recently re-built the TextExpander for iOS app from the ground-up. TextExpander for iOS version 4.6.5 did include a snippet editor when it was current.

With the new version we just released into the App Store, the first release did not include a snippet editor directly in the app. We are working to add this back into the iOS app and are currently beta testing it for the next release, which will include a library viewer and snippet editor. We expect to publish this update to the App Store in the next few weeks.

In the meantime, if you’d like to try out the latest beta version with these features, you can use the steps below to download and install it on your device. (I do recommend removing the App Store version first).

If you run into any difficulty or trouble, please feel free to reach out to support@TextExpander.com

But, why did you then sent an email to update to newest version WITHOUT telling, that it is not fully working? I deleted the old version, which is no longer available.

Sory, this problem was created by somebody who did not think holistic and damaged a lot of customers who trust TE for their product and now have NO access via IOS.

I would FIRE those persons, because of HUGE reputation damage.

And using testflight is the most silly recommendation at all. Stupidity 100x.

Good night. I am lemonadeed and annoyed.
