How Do I Get TextExpander to Expand Right After Another Character?

Ever have a Snippet that refuses to expand because you typed it right after another character?

You’re not doing anything wrong! There’s a Group Setting that controls what needs to come before your abbreviation, and changing it can make a big difference for certain workflows.

Here’s how it works:

By default, TextExpander waits for whitespace before it looks for an abbreviation. That means your snippet may not expand if it’s typed immediately after another character.

For example, you might expect:

(sig to expand after typing sig, but it won’t because there isn’t a space before the abbreviation.

The good news? You can change that!

Change your group’s expansion setting:

:one: Select the Snippet Group.

:two: Click the :gear: Gear to open Group Settings.

:three: Change Expand When from:

Whitespace precedes abbreviation

to:

Any character precedes abbreviation

Once you make that change, your snippets can expand immediately after another character—no whitespace required.

:light_bulb: This setting is especially useful if your abbreviations are commonly typed after characters like:

  • .
  • /
  • (
  • "
  • '
