Hi, when you see messages from TextExpander team members, we might use some internal jargon to refer to certain features. Here’s what those things mean:
Snippet
A reusable piece of text, such as a sentence, phrase, or block of text, that you create and can insert into any document or app using a shortcut. Think of it as a “text shortcut.”
Abbreviation
The short text or trigger you type to expand a Snippet. For example, typing “addr” could expand to your full address.
Label
The name you give to your Snippet.
Inline Search
A feature that lets you search for and expand a Snippet inside any desktop app. It’s especially helpful if you can’t remember the Snippet’s Abbreviation.
Here are the default hotkeys for Inline Search:
- macOS: Command + /
- Windows: Control + /
- Chrome: Control + Period
Expansion
What happens when you type an abbreviation: the Snippet replaces the abbreviation. For example, typing “tyvm” could instantly expand to “Thank you very much.”
Group or Snippet Group
A collection of related Snippets. You can group Snippets together to organize them, such as grouping all your email templates in one place.
Fill-in Field (or Fill-in for short)
A placeholder in a Snippet that lets you enter custom information when it expands. For example, a field might prompt you to type someone’s name or select an option from a dropdown menu.
Individual account (or ind. account)
A TextExpander account for use only by a single person.
Org account
A TextExpander account shared by a team or organization on our Business, Growth, or Enterprise tiers. See TextExpander pricing tiers.
