How to type the cents symbol (¢) with TextExpander

There are many common symbols that you won’t find on most physical keyboards, such as:

  • ¢ (Cents)
  • © (Copyright)
  • ° (Degree symbol)
  • € (Euro)
  • ¥ (Japanese Yen)
  • ® (Registered trademark)

Both macOS and Windows offer various codes or key combinations to type these, but they’re hard to remember. For example, press Option-4 on the Mac to insert the cents symbol. On Windows, press the Alt key and type 0162 on the number pad.

TextExpander offers a better solution. Create a Snippet with ¢ (or any other symbol) as the content. Then, add a simple abbreviation and label you can remember. If you subscribe to the Community Snippets Public Group, an example Snippet is included, which you can expand by typing com.cents. I recommend making your own copy and giving it a shorter abbreviation like ;cents.

I hope this little how-to makes cents!

Hey @josh.centers! Thanks for sharing. This reminds me of TextExpander’s Accented Words public group that I’ve subscribed to. Makes it easy to type words like entrée and fiancé without using a custom keyboard. A great time saver!

For the math wizards and Excel gurus out there, I use this trick to quickly pull symbols that you otherwise have to use “insert” feature. Definitely a great time saver!
