Rich Text vs. Plain Text: Understanding the Difference

When creating a Snippet, the Content Type field lets you choose between a Rich Text Snippet and a Plain Text Snippet. What’s the difference?

  • Plain Text is just what it says: Plain text without any pre-applied formatting. If you expand a plain text Snippet into a document, it should match the surrounding style.
  • Rich Text includes not only the text you enter, but any applied formatting, like font, size, color, and style.

When a Rich Text Snippet is expanded in a text field, it brings over all of your applied formatting with it. Let’s say you’re editing a document formatted in the Times New Roman font. And then let’s say you have a Rich Text Snippet set to use the Helvetica font. When you expand that Snippet, the text won’t match the surrounding text, which may not be desirable, as in the screenshot below.

If you’re experiencing this mismatch from your Snippets, there are a couple of ways to fix it.

The first is to find the Snippet in the TextExpander desktop app, open the Snippet Editor, and change the font to Match Font.

The other option is to click the Content Type dropdown at the top of the Snippet Editor and select Plain Text. Note that this removes all formatting in the Snippet!
