TextExpander Community Tip: How Replies Work

I’ve received some questions about how replies work in the TextExpander Community so here is a quick explainer on how replies work and how to keep conversations tidy, especially in long topics.

First, if you scroll to the bottom of a topic, you see an orange Reply button. Clicking or tapping Reply lets you add a reply to the topic in response to the original post.

However, each post in a topic also has a reply button that lets you respond to an individual post.

When replying to an individual post, click or tap the Quote button in the editor to insert that post into your post as a quote.

The post editor puts your text cursor below the quote block, under
so all you have to do is type and click Reply.

The other advantage of replying to individual posts is that they get grouped together and give you shortcuts to view each reply in a conversation, which is especially helpful when reading long topics.

Replying to Individual Paragraphs and Multiple Posts

Now that you get the basics, here is something a little more advanced. Many posts are long and you may want to reply to separate points within them. You can select the specific text in a post you want to reply to. A popover appears. Click Quote to insert the selected text into the post editor as a quote.

This way you can reply to multiple points in a single topic.

You can even reply to multiple people at once in a topic!

Other tips:

 • You can edit whatever is between the
and
block to trim down exactly what you want to highlight in your response.
 • You can also click the Quote button in the post editor multiple times to add multiple quotes of an entire post. You can then edit each down down to what you want to respond to.
