V8.4 (840.8) inline search broke?

I recently updated the version of TextExpander v8.4 however the inline search doesn’t seem to work at all. It will open but I cannot type it in it even if I click the in the search? Any recommendations?

It’s broken for me too. I just tried it for the first time in weeks, and it doesn’t even open for me.

Any comment from the Text Expander Team, @josh.centers ?

Hey @SharonGray I’ve put a word to the Support team and will get back to you ASAP.

Hi @SharonGray! I’m a developer helping to diagnose the issue so we can resolve it more quickly. We have a suspicion that the typed characters (and possibly results) in the inline search just aren’t displaying but may actually be “working.” Could you perhaps test opening the inline search, typing a simple abbreviation you know exists (you won’t see it), and hit enter to see if it expands?

I tested this and it did not expand for me.

Thank you for testing that!

@josh.centers I am still not having any luck should i see if I can downgrade?

We haven’t forgotten this! Engineering has been investigating all week.

Hi Josh,

Mine weirdly is still broken in the new version as well, I did try updating hoping it would fix it and uninstalling and reinstalling but it is still broke. The only thing I can think is I broke it by assigning a custom keystroke (i found the default tricky for smaller hands) but even changing it back to the default didn’t fix it.

Sorry to hear that Amanda. I’m afraid the other Josh has moved on so I’ll find another engineer to investigate your case.

Hello! Just jumping in here :slightly_smiling_face:

One thing to check- are you using any apps that remap your keyboard? PowerToys, in particular, can change how certain keypresses work and has been known to cause conflicts in some cases.

Oh good call I do have powertoys I don’t think i use any of the remapping but i will check thanks! I will try uninstalling both and reinstalling just textexpander and see if it fixes it.

Okay i tried that, I uninstalled PowerToys and TE and only re-installed TextExpander but it did not work. I have Logi keyboard which has the logi+ app but I haven’t mapped any of the keys. It is still pulling up the white box for inline search without allowing typing in it. It is super weird.

I haven’t been around to respond to this in ages, sorry. But I just wanted to let you know that mine seems to be behaving much better now. I haven’t needed to work on any really large testing documents for a while, so if I still encounter problems next time I do, I’ll let you know.
Thanks

I’ve been too busy to amateur troubleshoot into why it has not been working for me…still been using TE extensively throughout the day using this workaround to search - opening up TE with shortcut (setup your own via preferences) to search in software search bar.

Today I had some time and I uninstalled and re-installed it - still not working. It’s working on my Mac at home, but just not Windows at work.

Is there a way to download a previous version of the software?

Thanks.

@KiranVarma I was also having this problem but this time when i uninstalled i did a clean uninstall and it worked. Just incase you haven’t tried it here is what i did that worked. I am not sure of the exact steps for Mac but basically i had not previously emptied the recycle bin which is what made the difference.

  1. Uninstall TextExpander via Add/Remove Programs

2. Go to the Windows Desktop

3. Hit the Windows and R key simultaneously

4. In the Run window that appears type the following:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Smile

5. Delete the TextExpander folder and empty your recycle bin. (MOST IMPORTANT)

6. Restart your computer.

7. Download a new installer from here:

https://textexpander.com/download

8. Run the installer.
I hope it helps you!
~Amanda
