Ever expand a snippet on your Mac, and instead of your full text, you get one lonely little “V”?
No template.
No saved reply.
Just… V.
That usually means the snippet itself may be fine, but something interrupted the paste timing or permissions around expansion.
Here’s how to narrow it down.
Start with these questions
Which app does this happen in?
Does it happen in one specific app, or everywhere?
What macOS version are you using?
What TextExpander version are you using?
Did this start after a macOS update, reinstall, migration, or permissions change?
Do you use a clipboard manager?
Are you expanding inside Remote Desktop, Citrix, or a virtual machine?
Why this can happen
In some situations, TextExpander expands a snippet by placing the snippet content on the clipboard and sending the paste shortcut: Command + V.
Most apps receive that normally. But if an app needs more time, a clipboard utility gets involved, or macOS permissions are not behaving as expected, the app may receive only the “V” instead of the full paste command.
Tiny timing hiccup. Very dramatic little letter.
1. Test in a simple app first
Try expanding the same snippet in a simple text editor, like TextEdit.
If it works in TextEdit but pastes as “V” in one specific app, the issue may be specific to that app.
If it happens everywhere, check the other sections below.
2. Test Restore Clipboard
Go to:
TextExpander Preferences > Expansion > Restore Clipboard
Turn Restore Clipboard off temporarily, then test the snippet again.
If that helps, clipboard restoration timing may be part of what you’re seeing.
3. Check for clipboard managers
Clipboard managers can sometimes interfere with snippet expansion by grabbing or changing clipboard content right before TextExpander pastes.
Examples include apps like Paste, Alfred clipboard history, CopyClip, or other clipboard utilities.
To test this:
Pause or quit your clipboard manager.
Try expanding the snippet again.
If the issue stops, check whether your clipboard manager has an exclusion setting.
If available, exclude TextExpander from clipboard monitoring.
This helps confirm whether another utility is grabbing the clipboard at just the wrong moment.
4. Refresh macOS permissions
If this started after a macOS update, reinstall, migration, or permissions change, TextExpander may need its permissions refreshed.
Go to:
System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility
Find TextExpander, then toggle it off and back on.
Also check:
System Settings > Privacy & Security > Input Monitoring
If TextExpander appears there, toggle it off and back on as well.
Then quit and reopen TextExpander and test again.
This is different from Secure Input, but it lives in the same neighborhood of macOS permission oddities. Secure Input usually blocks expansion entirely, while stale permissions may cause the paste shortcut to behave incorrectly.
5. Advanced option: add the app to TextExpander’s paste pause list
TextExpander already adds an automatic pause before pasting in some known apps that need extra time, including Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Mail, Spotlight, Fantastical, Xcode, and most Microsoft apps.
If this happens in a different Mac app, there is an advanced option to add that app to the pause-before-pasting list.
Important note: this is not in the regular Preferences window. It is available through TextExpander’s scriptable preferences using AppleScript.
The related scriptable preferences include:
pause before Pasting bundles
Adds an app’s bundle ID to the list of apps where TextExpander pauses before pasting.
pause before Pasting time
Adjusts how long TextExpander pauses before pasting.
pause after Pasting bundles
Can help in cases where parts of a snippet land in the wrong order after pasting.

6. If this happens over Remote Desktop, Citrix, or a virtual machine
Remote environments can add extra timing issues because the paste command may need to travel between your Mac and the remote or guest machine.
Start by checking:
Is TextExpander installed on your Mac?
Is TextExpander installed on the remote or guest machine?
Is it installed in both places?
Does the issue only happen inside the remote session or virtual machine?
Expansion is usually more reliable when TextExpander is installed in the same environment where you are typing.
For Remote Desktop setups, the recommended approach is often to install TextExpander on the remote machine itself, then exclude the Remote Desktop client app from local expansion so the local TextExpander app is not trying to expand through the remote connection.
