Ever expand a snippet on Windows and instead of your full snippet, you get a single “V”?
No full response.
No template.
Just one very unhelpful letter.
That usually means TextExpander tried to paste the snippet, but something interrupted the timing between copying the snippet content and sending the paste command.
Here’s how to narrow it down.
Start with these questions
Which app does this happen in?
Does it happen in one specific app, or everywhere?
What version of Windows are you using?
What TextExpander version are you using?
Do you use a clipboard manager or Windows clipboard history?
Are you expanding over Remote Desktop, Citrix, or inside a virtual machine?
Does the same snippet work in Notepad?
Why this can happen
In some situations, TextExpander expands a snippet by placing the snippet content on the clipboard and sending the paste shortcut: Control + V.
Most apps handle that normally. But if the app needs a little more time to register the new clipboard content, the paste shortcut may not land correctly. When that happens, the app may receive only the “V” instead of the full paste command.
Tiny timing issue. Big “why is there just a V?” energy.
1. Test in Notepad first
Try expanding the same snippet in Notepad.
If it works in Notepad but pastes as “V” in one specific app, the issue may be with how that app handles pasted content.
If it happens everywhere, check the other sections below.
2. Increase Paste Timeout
On Windows, go to:
TextExpander Preferences > Expansion > Paste Timeout
Try dragging the Paste Timeout setting to the maximum value, then test the snippet again in the affected app.
This gives the app more time to register the clipboard content before TextExpander sends the paste command.
3. Test Restore Clipboard
Go to:
TextExpander Preferences > Expansion > Restore Clipboard
Turn Restore Clipboard off temporarily, then test the snippet again.
If that helps, clipboard restoration timing may be part of the issue.
4. Check for clipboard managers
Clipboard managers can sometimes interfere with snippet expansion by grabbing, replacing, or modifying clipboard content right before TextExpander pastes.
Examples include clipboard tools like CopyClip-style utilities, Alfred-style clipboard history tools, or Windows clipboard history using Windows key + V.
To test this:
Pause or quit your clipboard manager.
Turn off Windows clipboard history temporarily, if you use it.
Try expanding the snippet again.
If the issue stops, check whether the clipboard tool has an exclusion setting.
If available, exclude TextExpander from clipboard monitoring.
This helps confirm whether another clipboard tool is interrupting expansion at just the wrong moment.
5. If this happens over Remote Desktop, Citrix, or a virtual machine
Remote environments can make paste timing less reliable because the shortcut may need to travel between your local computer and the remote or guest machine.
Start by checking:
Is TextExpander installed on your local computer?
Is TextExpander installed on the remote or guest machine?
Is it installed in both places?
Does this only happen inside the remote session or virtual machine?
For Remote Desktop, the recommended approach is usually to install TextExpander on the remote machine itself, then exclude the Remote Desktop client app from local expansion.
To exclude the Remote Desktop app locally, go to:
TextExpander Preferences > Expansion > Expand Snippet Groups
Choose:
All Applications, Except
Then select the Remote Desktop app.
That helps prevent the local TextExpander app from trying to expand through the remote connection.
For Citrix, Parallels, or other virtual machine setups, the same general logic applies: expansion is usually more reliable when TextExpander is running in the same environment where you are typing.
What to send Support
If you still see only “V,” please contact Support with:
The app where this happens
Whether it happens in one app or everywhere
Your Windows version
Your TextExpander version
Whether the snippet works in Notepad
Whether you use a clipboard manager or Windows clipboard history
Whether you are using Remote Desktop, Citrix, or a virtual machine
Whether changing Paste Timeout helped
Whether turning off Restore Clipboard helped
Those details make it much easier to tell whether this is app-specific, clipboard-related, timing-related, or connected to a remote environment.
