Why Didn’t My Snippet Expand? Start with the basics

Ever type your abbreviation, wait for the magic, and then… nothing?

Before assuming your snippet has packed a tiny suitcase and left town, there are a few simple things worth checking first.

This week’s focus: snippets that don’t expand.

When a snippet doesn’t expand, start by checking:

  • Is TextExpander running?

  • Is expansion turned on?

  • Are you typing the abbreviation exactly as it’s saved?

  • Does the snippet work in other apps?

  • Is it happening with one snippet or all snippets?

  • Are you using a regular snippet or a fill-in snippet?

These details can help narrow down whether the issue is with TextExpander settings, a specific app, the abbreviation, or the snippet itself.

To help troubleshoot, reply with:

  • Where it’s happening: Mac, Windows, Chrome, iOS, etc.

  • Whether it happens everywhere or only in one app

  • The abbreviation you’re trying to use

  • Whether it’s one snippet or multiple snippets

  • Whether it is a regular snippet or a fill-in

We’ll help you narrow it down and share fixes others can use too.

Question for the community:

What’s the first thing you check when a snippet doesn’t expand?

I usually go to File > Disable expansion and then turn expansion off and then Enable expansion again it seems to fix it most often
